Three-Column Tables Remind Students of PBIS Expectations
Canterbury utilizes a PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) framework in our building, and a large part of this is setting clear expectations for various areas around our school building. You may have noticed three-column tables hanging in the hallways or the MPR as you travel throughout our building. These matrices are used to display how members of the Canterbury school community are expected to be safe, respectful, and responsible in that environment. School-wide expectations were created by staff and are positively stated expectations. For example, instead of “no running,” the expectation in the hallway is, “use walking feet.” Each classroom has also been working to create their own unique matrix of expectations specific to their learning environment. Ask your student what are some of the expectations for being safe, respectful, and responsible within their classroom setting! Interested in trying out this set-up at home? Here’s a brief introduction to creating a plan for positive behavior at home! #LearnGrowEngageGreendale #CultivatingExcellence

Students have been learning about the different types of AAC and have been watching their classmates use their own AAC devices to communicate. Some students even got the chance to have conversations with an AAC app in front of their classmates! Learning about different types of communication has helped all students be successful and feel welcomed here at Canterbury! #LearnGrowEngageGreendale #CultivatingExcellence

The Canterbury Way Is Supported by PBIS
Canterbury has implemented Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), a proactive, system-wide framework for creating and maintaining a safe and effective learning environment. PBIS focuses on setting common expectations which are followed in every area of the school. The three expectations of Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible are clearly defined in the classrooms, hallways, bathrooms, lunch, playground, and assemblies.
Another essential component of PBIS is recognition and celebration of positive behaviors. Canterbury recognizes students by handing out ‘PAWs’ to students who are showing safe, respectful, and responsible behavior. PAWs can be handed out to any student, by any staff member, at any time. This encourages students to always be showing their Canterbury best and helps spread positivity throughout the building.
Not only do PAWs serve as instant positive reinforcement for displaying expected behaviors, but they also function as raffle tickets in their weekly PAW pulls. Each Friday morning, two names are drawn from the collection of PAWs earned by each classroom throughout the week. These lucky students are then further recognized by special rewards determined by their classroom. This is another motivating way to encourage students to always follow “The Canterbury Way” of being safe, respectful and responsible! #LearnGrowEngageGreendale #CultivatingExcellence
Fifth Graders Busy With Literary Projects to Honor Dr. King & Perseverance
Ms. Guillen-Richman’s fifth grade class at Canterbury learned about an Agamograph, which is a series of two or more images that change with the viewer's movement.
