The Attributes of a Greendale Graduate, which were adopted in 2014, include these competencies: communication and collaboration, critical and creative thinking, citizenship, with character at the center and personal wellness as the glue that holds it together. These key attributes are in line with the Social Emotional Competencies adopted by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. This document indicates how each attribute is aligned to the state competencies. This work is important to support schools in teaching students in the following areas: emotional development that promotes students to understand and manage one’s emotions, self-concept which helps students develop positive self-identity and recognize self as a lifelong learner and social competence where students establish and maintain positive relationships by respecting others, practicing social skills, and making responsible choices while recognizing and connecting to the community at large.
Character Education is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. This curriculum is important to ensure:
-
Protective factor against many risks
-
Builds and sustains Resilience
-
Better able to manage/cope with mental health challenges
-
Increased achievement scores in reading and math
-
Connected with positive student outcomes
