Karla Geiger -- School District Garden Coordinator, Master Gardener Volunteer-Garden Project Co-Chair
Karla has been a supporter of the Greendale School District Garden since its inception in 2011, when a student came forward to administration with the idea to use a green space in a new way and create a garden. Working with Heidi Hennessy, Karla was encouraged to pursue becoming a Master Gardener Volunteer and she has learned and applied a great deal of research-based education through the UW Extension since 2016. She believes that gardening levels the playing field with people and centers all that visit the garden. She views a gift in our midst in that garden visitors of all ages and walks of life are in awe of nature and want to come together to work, play, learn and make the garden a better place. Over the past few years, even during the pandemic, she has held Summer Camp for kids in our School Garden. Since becoming the Garden Coordinator, a concerted effort has been made to increase the number of youth that visit the garden, as well as increased collaborations with the local Health Department on education and the community with sustainability initiatives like composting. This outdoor classroom is such a benefit and Karla is proud to share that it is our School Garden, a resource for the students, families, staff and greater community of Greendale!!
