The Greendale Board of Education recognized two community groups at its recent Annual Meeting. The Greendale Historical Society was recognized for its ongoing to work to support the education of Greendale student around the important and unique history of our Village. The Canterbury PTO was acknowledged for its outstanding effort and commitment to the Canterbury Playground Fundraising Project, which raised nearly $60,000 to fund a new play structure for students at the school.
The Greendale Historical Society, celebrating its 50th year in existence, has a goal to restore and maintain the history of our community. The group's education committee works regularly with our schools to ensure our students have opportunities to learn about the unique history of our Village. Historical society volunteers come to classrooms, give tours of our community and historic sites in our National Historic Landmark community, and work with our team to include our village history into the social studies curriculum in subject areas around national and local history.
The Canterbury PTO, in summer of 2024, approached the school administration asking when the aging playground on the west side of the building would be replaced. Understanding the budget and timing constraints of the district, the group made the decision to raise funds for the new equipment. The PTO leadership, with student input, worked to design a playground that met student needs. With a lot of hard work and creative fundraising, their goal of $60,000 was raised in nine months! The equipment was replaced in August and students began enjoying the new play space when the school year began.
We appreciate the time and dedication given by all of these volunteers and organizations to support our schools!
