Panthers in the Porkies! Eight GHS students and four teachers recently returned from the Porcupine Mountain Wilderness Area Backpacking Enrichment Course. This non-credited summer learning trip provided students with an immersive wilderness and multidisciplinary learning opportunity in Michigan’s UP.
High school content standards in the areas of environmental science, geography, cultural histories, and health and wellness are part of the learning. Students prepared with pre-trip sessions to practice gear use, learn about the natural history of the Porcupine Mountains, pack meals, and get to know their trail group. Their trip included hiking, tent and cabin camping.
